The right depth starts with what you want to do next. These are B&C’s approximate operating options, not a promise that every stump can be ground to every depth.
About 6 inches
Standard grinding for reducing the agreed stump wood below grade.
About 9 inches
Extra-low grinding when the planned use calls for more stump wood to be reduced.
About 12 inches
Considered when replanting is part of the plan and the stump and site allow it.
Your written quote should identify the planned depth. The stump, access, nearby irrigation or other underground conditions, and equipment requirements can change what is practical.
What stays below the surface
What happens to the roots?
Grinding removes the visible stump and lowers the agreed stump wood below the surface. It does not pull every root from the ground.
Surface roots are a separate decision.
If raised or accessible surface roots also need attention, B&C can evaluate that work separately and show what is included in your written quote. This is sometimes called surface-root grinding or root chasing.
Grinding does not create a root-free site or complete finished soil preparation. Chips, remaining roots, soil condition and the requirements of your next contractor can still matter.
If you are dealing with recurring sissoo shoots, tell us during the assessment. Managing a living sissoo root system is a specialized issue and should not be treated as ordinary stump grinding.

When grinding is not the whole solution.
A large exposed root mass after an uprooted tree may call for excavation rather than an ordinary stump grinder. Excavation equipment can lift and separate substantial stump and root material, but it also disturbs much more ground.
B&C needs to inspect the stump, access and surrounding area before recommending this approach. Not every storm-damaged or uprooted tree needs excavation.
The written quote should define the material to be removed and the condition B&C will leave. Backfilling, replacement soil, grading and final landscape restoration are separate decisions unless the quote specifically includes them.

Questions about stump grinding
How deep does B&C grind a stump?
B&C’s approximate options are about 6 inches for standard grinding, about 9 inches for extra-low grinding and about 12 inches when replanting is part of the plan. The practical depth depends on the stump, intended use, access, equipment and nearby or underground conditions. Your written quote should identify the planned depth.
Can I replant where a stump was ground?
Sometimes, but deeper grinding does not automatically make the exact spot ready for a new tree. Remaining roots, wood chips, soil condition and planting-space requirements still matter. Tell B&C what you want to plant so the stump work can be planned around that goal.
Does stump grinding remove all the roots?
No. Grinding reduces the visible stump and agreed wood below grade. Large lateral roots and deeper root material can remain underground, so grinding is not complete root eradication.
Can B&C grind raised or surface roots?
B&C can evaluate accessible surface roots as separate work. The written quote should identify which roots or areas are included and what finish is expected. This does not promise removal of the complete root system.
What is the difference between stump grinding and root-ball extraction?
Stump grinding reduces wood in place with a grinder. Root-ball extraction uses excavation equipment to lift and separate substantial stump and root material, creating much more ground disturbance. B&C must inspect the site before recommending excavation.
What happens to the wood chips and grindings?
Grinding creates a mixture of wood chips and soil. Your written quote should say what remains on site, what material handling is included and what surface condition B&C will leave. Backfilling, replacement soil, grading and landscape restoration should not be assumed.
Can B&C handle a stump after another company removed the tree?
Yes. B&C’s mobile stump-grinding crew can assess a standalone stump project. Share what you want to do with the area and any information you have about the earlier tree removal.
What affects stump-grinding cost?
Stump size and condition, requested depth, number of stumps, equipment access, nearby features, surface-root work, excavation needs, material handling and the agreed finish can affect the quote.
Can a stump be ground near walls, irrigation or landscaping?
B&C can assess the stump and access around walls, pools, irrigation and landscaping. Nearby features or underground conditions can limit the equipment approach or practical depth, so feasibility must be confirmed on the property.
