Frequently Asked Questions

Tree Care FAQs by B&C Tree Service

  • For most shade trees, late fall through early spring minimizes heat stress and sap flow. Fast-growing desert natives—mesquite, palo verde, sissoo—benefit from an early-summer trim just before monsoon season to cut wind-sail and limb weight. Aim to finish heavy pruning by mid-June, before storms hit.

  • On typical Phoenix residential lots, you usually don’t need a city permit. Exceptions include right-of-way trees, certain protected species, or homes in historic districts/HOAs with their own rules. Not sure? We’ll verify regulations and handle any paperwork so you stay fully compliant.

  • Shallow-rooted or over-irrigated mesquites, top-heavy palo verdes, and unbalanced eucalyptus are the usual casualties. Keep them stable with deep-root watering and structural pruning that removes weak co-dominant leaders and excess weight before high winds arrive.

  • Deep-soak mature trees to a 3-foot soil depth about every 10–14 days in summer; young transplants need weekly watering. Let the soil dry between cycles—use a soil probe to confirm depth—then water in the early morning (4-6 a.m.) for best uptake and minimal evaporation.

Tree Removal FAQ’s

  • It’s time to consider full removal when a tree poses more risk than value— for example, if over 50 % of the canopy is dead or diseased, the trunk shows deep cracks or fungus, the tree leans more than 15 ° after a storm, roots are uplifting foundations or pool decking, branches threaten power lines, or the species (like fast-spreading Sissoos) is invasive and damaging nearby landscapes. Removal is also recommended before major construction projects when clearance is required for equipment or future structures. An ISA-certified arborist can confirm whether pruning, cabling, or total removal is the safest, most cost-effective solution for your Phoenix or Valley property.

Tree Trimming & Pruning FAQ’s—Phoenix & East Valley

  • For desert species like mesquite, sissoo, and palo verde, late spring to early summer (May–June) builds stronger branch structure before monsoon winds. Palms are ideally pruned mid-June to early July once flower stalks emerge. Deciduous shade trees can be pruned in winter dormancy to avoid sap bleed. Our arborist will tailor timing to each species and site.

  • Most desert trees thrive best with professional pruning every 1–2 years. Younger trees benefit from yearly shaping to build strong structure, while mature trees usually need trims every 2–3 years—especially before monsoon season. Our ISA-certified arborists will help set the right schedule for your specific species.

  • Not when it’s done right! Our arborists follow strict ISA and ANSI A300 pruning standards to keep your trees healthy, balanced, and beautiful. We selectively remove only what's necessary—no harmful topping or over-cutting. Proper trimming helps your trees thrive.

  • Absolutely! We work closely with HOAs all across Phoenix and the East Valley. We'll review your community’s guidelines and manage any required approvals to make sure your trees stay compliant and your neighborhood stays happy.

Stump Grinding & Removal FAQ’s — Phoenix

  • Ideally, stumps should be removed as soon as possible after tree removal. Waiting allows pests like termites, carpenter ants, and fungus to move in, and the longer a stump sits, the harder (and costlier) it can become to remove later.

  • Typically, we grind stumps appx 4 - 6 inches below ground level, allowing easy grass or landscaping installation afterward. If deeper grinding is required for construction or planting larger trees, just let us know!

  • Absolutely. Our specialized equipment and careful planning ensure we can safely remove stumps even in tight spaces near utilities, sidewalks, fences, and pools.

  • We take extra care using ground-protective mats and strategic planning to minimize lawn disturbance. Our crew cleans up carefully afterward, leaving you a clean, stump-free yard.

  • You choose! We can haul it all away, or leave the wood chips behind for landscaping mulch or gardening use. We'll always leave your property neat and tidy.
